Description

Last year I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work on a dragon book for Scholastic by way of Becker&Mayer Books. I got to take a crack at designing 16 different mythical dragons from all over the world for a book called Sink Your Teeth Into Dragons.

The Gargouille presented a particular design challenge having both four wings and four legs. I wanted to give it a particularly aquatic design so I looked to sharks, which I feel are an under utilized inspiration source for dragons. The spikes on the dorsal fin of port jackson sharks provided a super good basis for the wing to get the characteristic thumb claw without making it too bat like. It terrorized fisherman on the river Seine in France by whipping up massive waterspouts(like water tornados) and destroyed many ships so that was important to fit into the composition. Its also pretty neat that this myth was the foundation for gargoyle sculptures the world over. Though with how much water he must take in when trying to eat drowning sailors, he must get some super runny poops.
