Stuff I Say

As I'm sure a lot of you know, today is the 20th anniversary of when the first Pokemon games were released in Japan.  Its certainly no secret that Pokemon has had a deep effect on my personal growth as an artist.  Before Pokemon I was mostly drawing dinosaurs or Dragon Ball Z, it was really Pokemon that really introduced me to the idea of creature design.  I remember staying up late when I was 10 years old to work on my project of drawing all 151 Pokemon on one sheet of paper.  Though I don't think I made it past 70 Pokemon in, it was really the largest single art project I had attempted at the time.  Being both an avid fan of the games and collecting the cards, Pokemon brought huge swaths of inspiration to a young me.  During car rides I would look out the window and try to imagine that Pokemon were real, which would become the seed that would grow into my Realistic Pokemon series years later.

Like many kids from the initial Pokemon boom, my interest in Pokemon waned after there was no more to do in Gold and Silver.  My tastes moved towards things like Kingdom Hearts and Soul Calibur before a new generation of Pokemon would catch my eye.  Pokemon Ruby was my game of choice when the Hoenn generation rolled in.  I have a vivid memory of going to K-Mart to pick up Ruby on the day of release and asking if they also had the Gameboy Advance SP.  The employee broke street date on the GBA SP and I went home with one early and the real prize in tow, Pokemon Ruby.  This was a whole new system and whole new generation and it was spectacular.  Sure the starters weren't really for me but boy oh boy that game had some great legendaries.  One of my fondest memories from games in general was finally succeeding in catching Latios after days of trying and after previously failing to catch any of the legendary beasts in Gold and Silver.  Though I don't look back at Ruby as being my favorite Pokemon game, it certainly has some of my best Pokemon memories attached to it.

With each following generation I would return to the world of Pokemon, bringing me back to the joy of a new set of Pokemon to discover.  Every time I set out on a new adventure it would remind me why I love games and gaming culture.  Pokemon has brought me so much, it helped teach me from a young age the value of perseverance and that no obstacle can be too daunting if you just put the work in, It's brought me so many friends over the course of my time with it, and it even afforded me the success in my career to really be able to live my dreams.  Without Pokemon, I'm not sure who I would have become, but all those hundreds and hundreds of hours I've piled into the games have been a key part in the development of who I became and have paid off ten-fold.  The point I'm trying to get at through all this mess is that you should take the time to play games that are important to you and you never realize how much of an impact they might make on you.

I'd love to hear about your experience with Pokemon.  What was your first game?  What was your first starter?  What was your first level 100?  What was your first shiny?(gyarados doesn't count)
