Wyvern by arvalis Wyvern by arvalis
Last year I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work on a dragon book for Scholastic by way of Becker&Mayer Books. I got to take a crack at designing 16 different mythical dragons from all over the world for a book called Sink Your Teeth Into Dragons.

This is one that most of you will surely be more familiar with, the wyvern. Wyverns are another one of those dragons that have been done so many times that its fun to play with some other ideas. For this one my though was basically, "but what if eagle was dragon". This is one of my favorites from the collection, I'm super pleased with how it came out. You'll also notice that the famous venomous tail barb is depicted here, however I went for a more stingray vibe. Sidenote, stingray barbs are super tight. Hope you guys dig it, I sure do.

my... GOD!
If there is one particular type of dragon that has always interested me, it is the wyvern.
You sir have captured my interest with this depiction of a wyvern.
It is among the MANY various mythical creatures/beings that I have long had a particular affection for.
(Especially since it is a simplistic design piece to my icon and is used with many of my signatures.)

Yea but fantasy nerds these days awalys keep arguing that Wyverns aren't Dragons cause of this stupid rule. That was made up by some D&D folk, which is really stupid tho, ofc i do he agree that Wyverns can be Dragons.

Are those feathers or keel scales?

Technically feathers are just scales but softer so.. yes.

Ummmm no. They are both made of Keratin but form separately.

Messed up with the wording in my comment.

Feathers are an evolution of scales. Early ancestors of Dinosaurs were reptiles. Then they evolved quills, then primitive feathers that were somewhat "frizzy", then thicker feathers. So is hair.

Dinosaurs are reptiles. And hair evolved separately from scales and feathers.

This is so lovely! I'm glad you chose a different approach to the wyvern!

If I were to have one critique, it's that his awesome wing is blocking out a good portion of his hind end. The wing itself looks great, it's just a little bit of a shame that we can't see your whole magnificent beastie.

I can't wait to see the rest!

I really like that you gave it a bird-like appearance but kept the scales, yet they are designed beautifully to almost give the appearance of feathers
