Spektre-2010 by arvalis Spektre-2010 by arvalis
EDIT: Fixed his feet and such

So i spend a bit longer on this character update, since he was the first of the bunch to be created. Feel like he has really come a long way, and im very pleased with this design. I went for a more gladiator look this time around. Made him more muscular, he started out that way, but had since gotten thinner and thinner; no more. There is an easter egg in this one perhaps, perhaps youll need to download to find it.

Nice improvement to it's predecessor but why are his wings, so small?Still this one looks cool.

He's got a lot of weight hanging off his back, and no heals to support it... looks kinda like he's about to fall over backwords. Perhaps if his lower legs were a bit more beastly? Right now he just seems like a guy standing on his toes.

Overall very good though. Love the costume!

Love seeing the progress you've made over time for this character; especially the anti-typical wing design.

Nicely painted and interesting costume design. I am getting hung up on his feet. His legs in previous designs were more plantigrade, and the smaller toes worked. But in this design his legs are straighter and more digitigrade, but his toes are still small/short. It seems like if he were real then he'd be falling backwards because there doesn't seem to be a counterbalance.

I love how the wings in the paint work simulate translucence. If there is one thing i would love to learn from looking over your gallery here in like 5 seconds, would have to be how to concept armour

I can't wait to see the next generation of those, when you'll have more matured this new style and given them better composition, color harmony and finishing. This one is already intimidating. Looking at this in one or two years... Will get really interesting.

I really like how you bulked him up! I always imagined him with more of this feeling ... where he's big, but more like a big teddy bear at the same time? And his updated gear as well, it feels a lot more rugged.

I'm glad that you update the deviation each time you change something in the picture! I've been saving all the versions and it's neat to see what changes you make and such; Things like the background colours growing cooler, the adding of rim lighting and all... It's nice how you've been suggesting shapes as well with your strokes in areas and not having to detail everything.

I don't know if it's just on my side, but I see a black thin horizontal bar crossing through half of it. :o
Despite that, I really like his design; his wing-things look pretty cool. ^_^ I prefer this version over the other. Really like the color in this too.

I have to be honest: I don't really like this character update. Mostly because Spektre is my most favorite of your original characters. Don't get me wrong, the techniques you used to execute this painting are fantastic and well thought out. But even though you updated this version, I still... there's something's off. I dunno.

What I really don't like is how much you beefed Spektre up. You can make a character muscular without making him huge. Best example ever: Disney's Tarzan (I absolutely am in awe by Tarzan's design and animation). Spektre seems like the world's heavy-weight boxing champion, instead of the swift and deadly killer that I always imagined him being. Actually, looking back, most of your updated characters gained inches.

Anyway, this is still unfreakingbelievable, I love the warm lighting and the cool shadows. :) And your textures are superb. I guess I just have an emotional connection to Spektre because I used to draw him quite a bit. Speaking of which, this horrid drawing is what Spektre is thinking about in this drawing: [link] XD This painfully shows the differences in our artistic talents. XD XD

Yeah i always thought about him in my head as the biggest and muscular character in the group. Though since all of my characters were pretty thin, he didnt have to be that much bigger to be beefy. Now that im trying to ge my characters to look less like archetypes and regular fantasy folk, i wanted to bring spektre out in a new way. Way back when i created him in 8th grade, i was still crazy into dbz, so as you can imagine he was really buff and veiny. He is supposed to look like a very strong warrior, he also has a reason for appearing neckless; the trapezius is used to move your shoulders back, and as he has wings they are used in that connection back there. Also thanks for the compliments. That little spektre sketch is pretty adorable btw.

Haazah! for DragonBall Z! XD You've gotta love that show. >.<

But seriously, even by DragonBall Z standards, Spektre is huge...! XD Just check out his pecs; they're bigger than some women's boobs! It's ridiculous, but in a good way... If you know what I'm getting at.

The more I look at this, the more I'm warming up to this updated design. However, I would like to see more defined muscles, especially in the calves. The way he looks right now, he looks chubby and muscular, instead of being big because he's muscular. I think if you just like... Michelangelo-styled his legs, or something, he'd look much more beefy because of beefy muscles, y'know?

lol i used entirely custom brushes that i made for this one. I only laugh because i painted spektre himself entirely with pancakes. I made a brush out of a zoomed in pancake texture XD.

Thanks very much. I should try to dig up some of my original spektre sketches from 8th grade in like 02/03. He started out not even wearing clothes per se', he had like demony blackness on his legs in the shape of shorts lol. DBZ was my main influences back then, so character design wasnt really my forte yet lol. Not till soul calibur and prince of persia warrior within hit me did i really start character development.

Haha, I think a lot of us had early anime inspirations. Isn't it a good feeling to look back and older art and compare them to present works? It's great to see progress and transition.
Prince of Persia also inspired me artistically. When I saw the concept sketches I was blown away. Video game concept art in general is very inspiring.
I think you've developed a very beautiful art style, and you have a great sense of body proportion, design, and color.

Oo! over the years, I think this is a great way to improve the design :3

I know you do a lot of great painting work, but in some areas (like his eyes, and his legs) it feels like it's getting "muddy", and that your character isn't popping out dimentionally. Maybe add some rim-lighting to his legs, to help him stand out from the background? And I know he's probably got red demon eyes, but it really feels like they're super sunken in... he's gotta have some glossyness,??

AND BTW... HOW DID YOU DO THAT CHAINMAIL!!! I friggin' love it. It's such a nice touch to his armor, and really FEELS like another texture!

Yeah i worked a bit more on him yesterday as per your suggestion. Though i didnt really want to pull his eyes out much, i like the sad and mysterious it gives off. As far as the chainmail, i kinda just spattered a buncha random textures and hen went in by hand to draw little lines for the links in the mail.

Aw, that's very thoughtful of you to take some of my suggestions... It really does feel like he pops out more from the background now! There's something about it that I'm noticing more details I didn't see before. Great work mate!!!

haha you make chainmail sound so easy. I'll have to try that next time (when I work on a char with chainmail) :3
