-Ninetales- by arvalis -Ninetales- by arvalis

Commissioned by ZarxielZerg

Ninetales is one of a select group of Pokemon more prized for its aesthetics than its utility.  Exhibiting a luxurious golden coat and elegant, slender features Ninetales is a common sight in the competitive world of Pokemon Contests.  They derive their common name from their wild appearance, where the are never seen without massive, matted dreads of hair extending from their hindquarters taking on the appearance of multiple tails.  In the wild these extra "tails" serve as a defense mechanism making the Pokemon appear a great deal larger than it really is.  However when bred for competition, these Pokemon are cared for under great scrutiny with daily brushing and are seldom allowed to develop the dread features.  The most highly prized competition Ninetales are seen trailing a nearly 6 foot train of sumptuous hair not visually dissimilar to an opulent gown.

Vulpix, unlike their mature state, offer a rich rufous coat.  Though Vulpix is charming it is quite the little rascal as it is exorbitantly playful.  Very confident and bold, these young Pokemon will tussle with almost any small Pokemon all the while squealing with delight.  It does take a moderate amount of time to develop the hindquarter dreads, as such it is not uncommon to see Vulpix with various numbers of "tails".  Like Ninetales, Vulpix is oft identified with the supernatural and spiritual.  It is said to gaze into their eyes offers a deeply spiritual experience, however you probably shouldn't do that for too long though because those dreads stink like butt.

Trevenant is a very unique cephalopod Pokemon.  Only needing to return to the water for breeding these Pokemon have evolved the ability to live terrestrially. Their soft bodies are easily damaged, calling for the use an unusual defensive adaptation.  They have a specialized beak that allows them to bore into trees and wear the pieces as a specialized armor.  As a result they take on the appearance of moving trees with demonic tendrils sprouting from them.  A ghastly sight to be sure, culminating in the uneducated believing them to be haunted trees or some such nonsense.  They have one major natural predator, the elusive Pacific Northwest Slaking that is rarely sighted by Slaking enthusiasts.

Small and radiant, Litwick are commonly called the candle Pokemon.  In reality Litwick are the polyp stage of the terrestrial jellyfish Pokemon, Chandelure.  Special conditions need to be met to develop full reproductive maturity resulting in the more common sightings of Lampent, the adolescent stage.  Using special gaseous bladders these Pokemon stay aloft trailing their tendrils in an effort to feed on small flying type or bug type Pokemon.  These Pokemon display a dull purple luminescence, resulting in the similar appearance to a ghastly apparition when observed at night.

Honedge, like Foongus have rapidly adapted its appearance to help blend in with the world of man.  With a gleaming silver abdomen and a highly derived thorax, Honedge takes on the superficial appearance of a flying sword.  A mated pair of these Pokemon will rarely leave each others side, this pairing is often referred to as a Doublade.  As the female reaches full breeding maturity, she expands into a shape one might describe as shield-like.  The male will also grow larger, however they retains the blade-like shape.  In this state, known as Aegislash, the male is the hunter though is very susceptible to harm, with the slower, extremely hardy female taking on a defensive position.  Honedge is the Pokemon of choice for a certain fedora-wearing subspecies of man, often collecting many of them for their basement dwellings.

Gastly line being bats? Fine by me.
Trevenant's a squid wearing a dead tree? That's OK.
But the Vulpix line not actually having nine tails? Sounds kinda forced, really.
I mean, you've established that psychic types still have psychic abilities, so what's the deal with a fox having more than one tail?
Aside from that, this is still pretty interesting, and I look forward to what you do in the future, especially the Ultra Beasts.
ZarxielZerg Featured By Owner Jan 5, 2017
Because the tails are too much to be realistical
AlphaShitlord Featured By Owner Jan 5, 2017  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Compared to what is essentially a plesiosaur in modern times that can communicate with telepathy and fly via telekinesis?
Yeah, I don't think so, buddy.
ZarxielZerg Featured By Owner Jan 7, 2017
Things like Lugia is more realistical then a mess of bones that became really deformed tails.

So; arvalis doesn't like Canines ...

When did I say that?

Alolan ninetales would basically just be a fluffier coated white breed of ninetales. Often used by people in the Northern parts of Russia and Canada it originates on the mountaintops of the island chain of Alola. It is a breed of ninetales that often sports a pack hunting behavior, often seen chasing herds of Tauros in the wild. This ability allows it to be a good sled pokemon, or hunting pokemon, also being used in pokemon contests for well being a breed of the majestic ninetales. Uneducated people believe the pokemon to have the power to freeze everything around it. This is actually a behavior that they have of chewing breath mints and stuff, if you don't know what sarcasm is the Alolan ninetales just prefers the colder parts of the world like Canada, Russia, Mountaintops in Alola. In ancient Alolan mythology the Alolan ninetales is often worshipped as a mountain spirit for being majestic. People often get killed by wild Alolan ninetales for getting too far into their territory. Wild Alola ninetales are also known to kill livestock such as miltank, and mareep as a result it is being poisoned and hunted.

Admittedly, I wish Litwick / Lampent / Chandelure were re-imagined as glowworms / fireflies.

Trevenant is based on the Pacific Northwest tree octopus!! So clever, I love it!

Some eldritch stuff right there. I just imagine there being a legendary like Deoxys or the weather dieties playing the part of eldritch god-being visible through a tear in the sky.

I love logic: Haunted trees? Nonsense? Terrestial octopi living inside trees? That's more like it!
But I do love these ideas, and I love pokemon presented as actual animals
Marjiem Featured By Owner Jul 18, 2016
This is incredible! You are unbelievably talented and creative! I never would have thought to turn treevant into a type of cephalopod! I love the idea, especially because it is a lot less creepy than their original back story.

Chandelure/Jellicent Line: Jellyfish
Golurk Line: Salamander
Hoopa: Slug
ZarxielZerg Featured By Owner Jul 26, 2016
Sableye is a sloth, he alredy make it in Steelix piece.
The evolutionary lines will be the same animals, so Shuppet and Banette will be the same thing, and same for Duskull, Dusclops and Dusknoir.
For Hoopa me and RJ already discussed about him, probably he will be a bee/thermite queen and the Unbound form is a huge hive.

P.S. you forgot Arceus :P
Coolkuy Featured By Owner Edited Jul 26, 2016  Hobbyist Artist
3 things.
1, i kinda wait for a chance to use normal types to do arceus- or it will be just annoying

2, i know they are evolutions, but if they were real, they probably wouldnt be related.

3, im not completely copying RJ, i didnt really see it clearly and thought he made it a frog, and how was i supposed to know what you would discuss RJ about privately
ZarxielZerg Featured By Owner Jul 26, 2016
1-yhea, you right XD
2-yhea, they would, since they are of the same line, if you make them unrelated they are not that Pokémon realistical, but a different creature similar to that Pokémon (and RJ already confirmed all evolutionary lines Pokémon are EVER related)
3-This is not what you think will be RJ's thought?
Coolkuy Featured By Owner Jul 26, 2016  Hobbyist Artist
i said completely. sometimes i will copy something if it makes sense or i have no idea, but if i have a idea i like more, i will most likely use that idea.

Oh my god this is so fucking boring! Why can't ghosts jsut be ghosts? Why can't trees be haunted? why can't candels be possessed? This is so unimaginative? Wy can't there be fantasy in a word that clearly has fantasy elements?

What part of "Realistic Pokemon" do you not understand?
ZarxielZerg Featured By Owner Jul 26, 2016
RJ make resarch in animals and biology form make his Pokémons. Is impossible make research for ghosts, and make them like ghosts realistically is REALLY hard so is highly probably make some errors, so RJ decided to make them creepy animals.

JabberwockTheLemur Featured By Owner Jul 18, 2016
It's called "Realistic Pokemon" for a reason, y'know.
BombOPAUL Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2016
Because it aims to be portrayed as a creature book. Its always nice for other people to see artists "realistic" take on monsters. You probably took this too unbearable. For the rest of us its cool
UxieSweetie Featured By Owner Jun 24, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
This is absolutely stunning, my gosh!  I especially love the idea of Honedge being a biological creature as opposed to a sentient sword.  This is incredible and the detail is amazing! You just got yourself a +Watch  Keep up the good work, friend!
Hojak1226 Featured By Owner Jun 22, 2016  Student Digital Artist
I dont understand all this hate you get for these realistic pokemon, I reckon its super creative how you turn ghosts and floating swords into biologically correct animals, you must do a ton of research too, props to you man, keep up the good work.
Cr0ss0ver3 Featured By Owner Jun 22, 2016  Student General Artist
listen your a great artist and we all understand that. But you have to understand that not all pokemon are based on real things. And that Lugia would not eat the quilfish cause first of all lugias a freeking god and second of all its the guardian of the sea for crying out loud.
Like when u made that IceCream pokemon(I forgot its name) its not a bug just draw icecream add a few adjustments add a face   and BOOM u got it :)
part of being an artist  is that- OMG U THINK HAUNTERS A BAT! >:O
anyway part of being an artist is using ur Imagination but ur not doing much of that by assuming all pokemon are based on animals. sum aren't even based on anything! Sorry but its the nicest way I could but this
AlphaShitlord Featured By Owner Jan 1, 2017  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Now listen closely (Robbie Rotten GIF Icon) Speech Bubble - Left speaker 1Listen closely:

You're missing the entire point.
Arvalis is trying to imagine what Pokemon would be like if they existed in reality.
Meaning: no sentient objects, no supernatural bullshit like ghosts or genuine gods or demons, they're all just animals that get mistaken for such things.
Just because you don't like someone else's interpretation of something, it doesn't mean no one else can enjoy it either, so shut. The fuck. UP.

Buttbuttroo Featured By Owner Jul 2, 2016
The whole point of this art series is to make pokemon seem as realistic as possible.
RedSpandex Featured By Owner Jun 30, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Wow Finally someone gets it. I could't disagree with you more. Arvalis's style reflects on the idea of Pokemon existing in reality. This means that Lugia is not a GOD. It is just another creature living on earth. There is also no sentient Ice cream. Don't argue with someones style until you understand what they were going for.
TornAroundtheEdges Featured By Owner Jun 22, 2016
"an artist is using ur Imagination", so you think they should do that by exactly copying what already exists? You may disagree with Arvalis' interpretation (which has nothing to do with you, it's not worth getting offended over) but they are pretty unique takes on pokemon. A million people have just drawn ice cream with a face on it for vanilluxe, how many version have you seen where he's interrupted as an arthropod? Designing pokemon like living animals, INCLUDING the ones based on non-living objects or ghosts, is the whole point of this project. As such, he designs them to fit the rules of his own fun creative idea.
arvalis Featured By Owner Jun 22, 2016
I'm going to put this in the nicest way possible. Those are your opinions, and I happen to disagree with you completely and think you're wrong.
angaturama2 Featured By Owner Jun 21, 2016
