Commission to the wonderful :iconranchmaker:

Boy this one was tricky. Looking at Gastly, I cracked it, his eyes could be bat ears; then the rest just fell into place design wise. None of the Gastly family are actually ghosts, but have just been claimed to be. Gastly and Haunter on live in caves and empty towers, appearing only at night. Their forms are very hard to make out as they have deceptive camouflage; Gastlies appear to be little more than a head at first glace, though in actuality are a very large poisonous bat. Each member of this family possesses a helium bladder, giving them the ability to float and taking on a ghostly appearance. Gengars do not occur in the wild, they are the result of a trainer taking their haunter to a new region, this results is a radical shift physique. Though Gengars do possess the ability to levitate, they are much heavier than their kin and can only levitate to avoid attacks. Each of them can produce a poisonous cloud by ruffling their fur, releasing dried toxic saliva into the air; though Gastlies seem to do this most commonly. They are hyper carnivores, preying on anything they can find, most commonly their relatives, Zubats. Rattata doesn't like picture day.

Also, happy almost Halloween.

Although this is better than I could do, I think it would have been better to just go with a ghost

Before i get into it, while I dislike the interpretation of this evolutionary line as bats, I don't deny the artistic value. However, in my opinion, you should have held of on doing Gengar and the other until you did Clefable, as it's a highly popular theory (and is rather credible as well) that Gengar is a Clefable's ghost, or shadow given life. This is supported by Gengar's name as well. Gengar is likely a nod to the word "doppelganger".

Again, despite my dislike of your particular interpretation, I still enjoy your work, and can't wait to see what you do next. :)

Very well done in terms of the actual art, but I'm not a fan of the interpretation. I wish you could have found a way to draw a realistic ghost type, because in the world of Pokemon ghosts are a very real thing... I would have just liked to see how that would have translated in a more realistic setting. Never thought of Ghastly/Haunter/Gengar to be even remotely batlike, so it just feels like something completely different, while almost all of the other pictures I've seen you do feel perfect.

I mean it's your interpretation so you're free to draw whatever you want, but since I really like your work I'm just saying what I wish I'd seen you do.

Haha, you get the weirdest hate for these.  This is a spectacular piece, and I love that you made it different.  How boring the world would be if we only copied and never innovated!

also the excuse that they live in caves so people can't see there true form is also bullshit because there are a ton of trainers who bring them up to heavily light areas were there camo would be bypassed and people could clearly see there "True forms" .

So do you know what basilosaurus is?  Basilosaurus translates to "king lizard", however it is actually an ancient whale.  The original people who found it mistook it for a dinosaur or aquatic reptile so they named it as such.  The thing is, its still called basilosaurus even though that makes no sense.  What I'm getting at is that people a lot time ago mistook something for another thing but they still refer to it with incorrect terminology because its what stuck.  So its entirely possible before there were pokemon trainers people spotted monsters in caves they assumed to be ghosts and even after it was discovered they weren't, they still called them ghost types.

if they saw that they were clearly bats then they would call them bats ancient people weren't stupid they just didn't as much as we do.

I meant that acutel gengar haunter and ghastly didn't look any thing like bats nor were they even remotely based off of bats so you shouldn't have made them bats because they have nothing to do with them

well what you did with lugia works because you can still tell it's him without anything telling you it really is him but with these three I can only barely see ghastly in the one you say is ghastly and I can't see haunter or gengar at all in the other two

Creative ideas you have going on here, especially with the bat's ears being the ghastly's eyes.

However, designing these Pokemon to look like animals they aren't even based on completely takes away the charm, in my opinion. None of the Pokemon in the Ghastly-Haunter-Gengar line ever resembled a bats.

Really they've always seemed like their own thing, not resembling anything real life. Because of this, it escapes me why you would want to design them as ordinary animals. It just takes away their iconic looks in exchange for a pretty lame design.

Your Gengar especially suffers from this, as he's nearly unrecognizable. He doesn't even look like a Gengar, just a fat purple bat with arms and legs.

Not trying to be rude, I'd just like to see your work improve, as you have some good artistic talents to share.

I don't think they're lame designs, but I do agree with you that they're not anything like the Gastly/Haunter/Gengar pokemon. They've strayed too far from the original design to be recognizable as what they're supposed to be.

I think the Haunter and Ghastly look fine, it's just the Gengar that rubs me the wrong way. I just don't like it, personally.

But thank you for sharing your opinion. You've summed up my thoughts better than I did. lol

Aside from sharing Gengar's shade of purple, I disagree.

In terms of what you were going for, they still resemble 'ordinary' bats; as opposed to the Pokemon you were trying to depict.

My mainest problem with this - besides the fact that a bat turns into a decidedly non-bat creature upon growing up, but this is the same world that has a small shrimp turn into an octopus, among other things, so - is that Gastly doesn't look like it would weigh 0.2 pounds, what with them not consisting of gaseous substances.

What shrimp turns into an octopus?  If you are talking about remoraid, not a shrimp, I handled that in my lugia piece.  I also dont take any official weights into consideration, there is no way that wailord weighs only like 800lbs.

People stop hating! Arvalis didn't draw this for you so you, nor did you pay them to draw it a certain way, have no right to say it is incorrect. As long as the paying customer is happy, the design is perfectly fine. Besides, there isn't a right or wrong way to draw Pokemon. You could draw an orange scribble, give it wings and a flaming tail and call it Charizard and it would still be a Pokemon. It has a reason to be a bat, so let it be a bat! If you want it to be a ghost, then draw it yourself!

WOW! this is amazing! I like this take on the family even more than the original one, which I thought would be impossible. As for the people that "don't see it," I think they are just too stubborn to admit how much the illusion works. I will consider the family to be ghostly, poisonous bats from now on. There can never be too many bat pokemon anyway.

The Ghastly in the corner is very clever. The big cartoonish eyes are actually his ears in your biological drawing. That is really smart.

Yeah, that's the bit that really got me. I was looking at his art thinking, "I wonder how he'll do Ghastly and its evolutions." I wasn't expecting him to show it as a sort of bat-related creature. Very creative.
