Commission to the wonderful :iconranchmaker:

Boy this one was tricky. Looking at Gastly, I cracked it, his eyes could be bat ears; then the rest just fell into place design wise. None of the Gastly family are actually ghosts, but have just been claimed to be. Gastly and Haunter on live in caves and empty towers, appearing only at night. Their forms are very hard to make out as they have deceptive camouflage; Gastlies appear to be little more than a head at first glace, though in actuality are a very large poisonous bat. Each member of this family possesses a helium bladder, giving them the ability to float and taking on a ghostly appearance. Gengars do not occur in the wild, they are the result of a trainer taking their haunter to a new region, this results is a radical shift physique. Though Gengars do possess the ability to levitate, they are much heavier than their kin and can only levitate to avoid attacks. Each of them can produce a poisonous cloud by ruffling their fur, releasing dried toxic saliva into the air; though Gastlies seem to do this most commonly. They are hyper carnivores, preying on anything they can find, most commonly their relatives, Zubats. Rattata doesn't like picture day.

Also, happy almost Halloween.

Haunter's design is probably my favorite, the transparent wings with the non-transparent parts looking like his floating hands.

I suppose that I couldn't think of a better animal to base the enigmatic Gengar line on in a million years.

How can anyone complain about this? I mean, sure it isn't a real ghost, but then that wouldn't be as interesting, and what more design wise could you possibly do with a ghost?!

On the other hand, it is a bit of a shame that you didn't go the amorphous, non-corporeal creature route. You could've made one hell of an interesting entry that way, even mentioning the theory of them not being necessarily ghosts, but creatures from another dimension, and how the feed on the life force of victims for food.

Oh, and run Rattata, run! Run for your very life!!!

This is so creative it hurt my brain. Amazing job. I have a special fondness for Gengar: when I was little I had a stuffed Gengar plushie I loved to death.

Am I the only one who would cuddle the Gastly?

I like how you modeled Ghastly off of a bat. If you look at it from a certain angle though, it looks more like its in game form. That's a nice touch.

Ha, looks at Gastly, its so round, a round bat, I want plushie of one. Wait I already have a plushie like that, it's a Woobat. Anywho, this has to be one of your best ideas for realistic Pokemon, and that's saying something.

Man... I got so hyped up by the rest of the gallery to see the ghosts and... ehn. I mean, heck, if we're going that route, why not owls? They get mistaken as ghosts a lot too.  But I was more actually hoping to see the ghost of some other species, like clefable due to the whole "shadow/ghost" thing (gengar/doppleganger).

I'm not sure, but I think he want to see a Ghost like a owl (I think Duskull line will be perfect) or a possible relation between realistic Gengar and realistic Clefable, but I don't sure if I understand XD

Wow, designing them as bats is something unexpected and kind of interesting. I actually kind of like the trick with Ghastly's "eyes" and how you explained the cloud around it. Also, I just like the look of Gengar. The way you did Gengar's smile, ears and body look cool with a bat as a bases for the design. I just think the way you drew Gengar is such a cool, yet simple design and I like it.

What I love about your art compared to a lot of other realistic Pokemon drawers is that you don't do what I see a lot--where they pick an animal that has similar characteristics and just color it according to a Pokemon.  I like that you create a different species rather than just limit it to common animals.  I don't understand why so many comments complain about it not being exactly as the Pokemon themselves.

I never took the time to look at the gengar comment section, its pretty amusing, just what exactly where people expecting? a farting ball?
I guess people really like the ugly original pokemon designs rendered in 3d, but thye shouldn't consider them realistic by a long shot.

Before i get into it, while I dislike the interpretation of this evolutionary line as bats, I don't deny the artistic value. However, in my opinion, you should have held of on doing Gengar and the other until you did Clefable, as it's a highly popular theory (and is rather credible as well) that Gengar is a Clefable's ghost, or shadow given life. This is supported by Gengar's name as well. Gengar is likely a nod to the word "doppelganger".

Again, despite my dislike of your particular interpretation, I still enjoy your work, and can't wait to see what you do next. :)

Very well done in terms of the actual art, but I'm not a fan of the interpretation. I wish you could have found a way to draw a realistic ghost type, because in the world of Pokemon ghosts are a very real thing... I would have just liked to see how that would have translated in a more realistic setting. Never thought of Ghastly/Haunter/Gengar to be even remotely batlike, so it just feels like something completely different, while almost all of the other pictures I've seen you do feel perfect.

I mean it's your interpretation so you're free to draw whatever you want, but since I really like your work I'm just saying what I wish I'd seen you do.
