Battle of the Octosuchus by arvalis Battle of the Octosuchus by arvalis
Here is my Rift Contest entry for the planar theme of life.

Looking at all the other entries, very few have wide compositions. Something doesnt need to be super tall to be colossal, look at a blue whale. So whats cooler than an eight legged blue whale sized crocodile.

The idea i had was based on Odin's eight legged horse. This colossal croc has plover like scavenger birds that feed on the remnants of whatever gets stuck in its teeth. These birds are based around the description of odin have spear like head crests and beard-like feather ruffles under the jaw. These giant monsters are very hard to kill if at all, this one has dozens of weapons left in its hide after its many triumphs. It grows a dense layer of moss on its back as well.

Hope you guys like this, it took a lot of sheer will power to persevere, started it on friday night. Gotten very little sleep since.

Huh - I was guessing it was inspired by the versions of the basilisk that depict it as an eight-legged serpent.

Awesome nonetheless. :D

When I look into your gallery, Like... the 2 first pages are epic and professional and all. But this pice, tis like the middle from your old drawing and the new, I really feel that when you did it you understand something. This piece and the ''fishing'' one.

I am looking forward to the day I will understand it too.

You art is epic and your captures the texture like no one does. I would like to have you as a teacher!

good continuation <3

I remember a while back you mentioned something about a moving island concept. While searching for traditional entries in the contest, I came across [link] . Kinda touches on the idea of it.

Magggot Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2011  Student Digital Artist
It's pretty, no doubt about that. It's really well rendered and I love the lighting. I also think the composition is awesome.

My only two things that I would say is this colossus just doesn't really strike me as original or creative at all. Since this is a "design a concept for a colossus" I would think more focus should be put into the actual colossus itself (and I've seen plenty of others do it as well, not just you.) It's a really big crocodile? Let me know if I'm missing something.
My other little thing is just the game itself. Not that I think it really matters, but in RIFT, crocs are of the Water plane.

Anyways, wonderfully done - a really impressive painting. I just think it lacks uniqueness or creativity as far as the colossus concept goes.
arvalis Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2011
I went with what would be more unique compared to the other entries. Pretty much all of the other entries are very over designed with all sorts of little doo-dads. Originality can be in the simplicity of things somethings. It is a terrestrial eight legged crocodile based on the horse of odin, not something ive ever seen. It is also not of the water plane because that is expected, its a forest dwelling crocodile that just knocks over trees if it needs to get through. When i think colossal, i dont think about monster that look like they belong in a final fantasy game, i think about whales, elephants, dinosaurs, etc. I did do some silly fantastical designs in my sketchbook, but none of them had any real impact. Most people have seen crocodiles, at least in photos, so its easier for them to associate the scale of a normal croc to how big this one is. One of the things the judges are gonna be looking at is impact according to the contest page, so a strong composition is needed more than just a cool design on a page i figure. I went through all 7,000 some entries and the ones i really noticed were the simple concept ones, they stand out so much more than the ones that tried to fit too many influences in. This might be my favorite entry [link] its elegant in the ideas it presents, something you can easily understand yet has impact. Anyone can sling together a buncha silly things into a monster, it takes a certain maturity or restraint to work in the confines of a simpler idea; to cut out the fat and present something original. Thats just my take anyway, take it as you will.
Magggot Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2011  Student Digital Artist
I do agree that simplicity can be a strength, however my favourite entries in RIFT have been those that I haven't seen before. I'm not a fan of a messy compilation of things where it's hard to tell what the colossus is, but something like the first example on the contest page ([link] giant skele-colossus) definitely grabbed my attention. I would be scared to see that on the field.

I would think that if I were a gaming company looking for a new colossus design, I would look for a mixture of both simplicity and originality. I would want to see something exciting that would make me fear the colossus rather than see a blown up version of another enemy I've already been fighting through the whole game. When I was playing RIFT and I came across my first colossus, it was really intense because it was unlike anything I'd ever seen and that made me know that this was going to be special.

The nice thing about RIFT is that the game takes on a lot more of a realistic aspect so a Final Fantasy type creature wouldn't belong. [link] RIFT takes a kind of in between fantasy and realism style that I like. And it does already have: [link]

Well I may be looking into this too deeply. I just wanted express my opinion about some of the entries I've seen around here - Not trying to argue here, by the way!

It's just a matter of opinions.
